Womble-Carlyle
Project: "Winston the Bulldog"
Agency: Greenfield - Belser
Running Time: Several 15 second spots

Overview: Law firm Womble-Carlyle has long used Winston the Bulldog as a mascot. But all of the tenacity and willful spirit that makes bulldogs great mascots can also make bulldogs difficult to film. When Womble-Carlyle gave Greenfield - Belser the go-ahead to switch to a digital dog for a series of regional advertisements, the ad agency turned to Hatchling Studios.

Creative: Hatchling created the new Winston using older advertisements and film footage as reference. Winston’s new, 3D incarnation allows Hatchling’s animators to take Winston to new heights; whether hanging from a wrecking ball, juggling puzzle pieces, or jumping a high bar, Winston can do things now that no living dog could ever hope to achieve.

Technical: Winston is a fully realized 3D character, with over 40 controls for animators to adjust. Winston shows off many of Hatchling’s technical capabilities, from his complicated quadruped rig, to the sub-surface scattering techniques in his skin, to the dynamic secondary motion in his ears. Of special note is Winston’s simulated fur coat, which consists of over 750,000 digital hairs.
