Jonathan Borofsky
Project: "Walking to the Sky"
Overview: Internationally renowned sculptor Jonathan Borofsky sought Hatchling's help for pre-visualization and promotion of his sculpture "Walking to the Sky," which displayed in New York's Rockefeller Square in September and October of 2004. Featuring seven people striding purposefully up a steeply angled walkway, "Walking" reaches 100 feet into the air, making it the tallest free-standing art sculpture in the world at the time. In addition to the technical implementation, Hatchling collaborated with Borofsky in a number of ways, including development of the characters, their costumes, poses, etc.
Creative: Hatchling worked closely with the sculptor to ensure that his vision for the piece translated seamlessly from idea to 3D model to physical sculpture. "Working with Hatchling has been an inspiration and a true creative collaboration," noted Borofsky. "They are not mere techies simply digitizing images; they demonstrate an advanced understanding of form and are artists in their own right."
Technical: After sculpting, posing, and tweaking all elements of the sculpture, Hatchling rendered high-resolution images for print and web promotional materials. Additionally, Hatchling's 3D models were used in conjunction with a 3D printer to create the physical elements for the final sculpture. These "printed" sculptures were then sanded, painted, reinforced, and assembled into the final piece.
